US agricultural group to pay €1.5 bn to acquire Provimi and strengthen its European business

The US agricultural group Cargill has acquired the pet food manufacturer Provimi for €1.5 bn. Provimi was acquired by the investment fund Permira in 2007 and restructured. The company also produces pet food products in the private label sector. Industry experts expect the fragmented pet food market to be consolidated by the takeover. Apart from Cargill, other companies striving to acquire Provimi were the Dutch firms Nutreco and DMS and also the Chinese New Hope Group.
