IJsvogel wins PET Retailer of the Year award

Award presented at the first International Pet Conference. About 200 delegates from the pet supplies sector meet in Frankfurt

The Dutch IJsvogel Group has carried off the PET Retailer of the Year award at the first International Pet Conference. Director Ard Malenstein received the award at last night’s gala function.
With around 190 Pet’s Place stores, 82 Boerenbond outlets and 240 Agri-Retail stores, in which the IJsvogel Group has a 50 per cent holding, the Nijmegen-based group of companies is the undisputed market leader in the Dutch pet supplies trade. It is also active in the wholesale business and as an importer of pet products. The group has also recently launched three pilot stores in Spain under the Pet's Place logo.
The jury based its decision on the IJsvogel Group’s dynamics and on its corporate policy geared to maximum proximity to the market. The group has succeeded in integrating the wholesale and retail firms it has acquired in recent years quickly and rationally into its set-up. The jury was also impressed by the wide range of marketing activities, some of them unconventional, deployed by the group in the last few years to raise the profile of Pet’s Place markedly in the Netherlands. These include for example a three-year multimedia project, in which the IJsvogel Group is investing 1.5 million euros.
The first International Pet Conference, taking place from 14 - 15 November 2006 in Frankfurt am Main, has attracted about 200 participants from 14 countries. The conference has been organised by the trade journal PET in Europe, published by Dähne Verlag, and Management Forum. Under the heading “International PET retailing - where are the new challenges to be found for the pet business?” leading representatives of the sector from trade and industry are discussing topics such as “Key trends and developments in the international pet product market”, “The potential in the growth market of eastern Europe”, “International retailing”, “International alliances and partnerships”, “The challenge of China” and “Multichannel retailing”. Also taking place in parallel with the conference is the Pet World 2006 exhibition, at which manufacturers and service providers are presenting their new products, technologies and services.
