Diamond expands its dry dog food recall The voluntary recall by US pet food manufacturer Diamond Pet Foods of some of its pet food brands was expanded in May after a salmonella outbreak at its plant in Gaston/South Carolina left 14 people sick in nine states. According to a report by Petfoodindustry.com, the latest expansion of the recall included pet food produced at a second Diamond facility in Meta/Missouri. “Diamond Naturals” (particularly the Lamb & Rice dry dog formula), Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Adult Light Formula and “Diamond Puppy Formula” had already been recalled in April 2011 after random sampling showed that some of the food tested positive for salmonella. Some companies that co-manufacture with Diamond Pet Foods have also pulled their products, including Natural Balance, Kirkland Signature/Kirkland Signature Nature’s Domain, Apex Pet Foods, Canidae Pet Foods and one type of Wellness Complete Health puppy food. The companies claim it is a precaution because no pet or human illnesses have been reported in association with these brands, nor has sample testing shown that any of their bags have salmonella. PET worldwide comes out six times a year and has a print run well in excess of 11 000 copies. This year’s issue No. 6 of the trade magazine is being planned as a birthday number to mark its tenth anniversary and will contain a great deal of information on the development of the international pet supplies sector. The date of publication of this issue is 11 October. Assalco: Italian pet market on the rise The Italian pet supplies market is not suffering from the economic downturn.
