In nature, ozone is released into the air or water following a storm. Ozone has a purifying effect on the environment, and it is this effect that Philips Lighting is now exploiting for the aquarium. Working in collaboration with biologists, the company has developed a water purifier that delivers minimal, preset quantities of ozone. The organic waste matter, bacteria and viruses present in the water are thereby converted into harmless substances. The result, according to Philips, is a presentable aquarium with water that is crystal clear for up to 150 days and has no unpleasant odour. The water purification process is entirely safe for both fish and aquarium owner. Extremely user-friendly Ozone generators are nothing new in fishkeeping. They have been used in marine aquariums and ponds for years to keep the water clean. In freshwater aquariums, on the other hand, they represent an innovation, especially since Philips offers a complete system that contains a membrane pump with air outlets and all the necessary clips and hoses as well as the ozone generator. The advantages of the new system for aquarists are obvious: regular water changes, which are not generally very popular, can now be dispensed with. Using the new system, the water only has to be changed twice a year, according to the advice from Philips. And the advantages are evident even when setting up a new aquarium, as fish can be introduced into the aquarium after just three days – without a water purifier this is only possible after two weeks. The reason for this, according to Philips, is that the water purifier eliminates the toxic nitrite peak, a typical problem in newly set up tanks. Waste matter is quickly and efficiently converted into harmless nitrate. Philips says that the unit also quickly creates a safe ecosystem for fish. The system can be installed in a matter of minutes. It is very energy-economical according to Philips, something that has been confirmed by experienced aquarists. Another particularly important point made by the company is that the water purifier ensures that bad bacteria and even viruses have much less of an opportunity to infect fish and make them ill. The culture of good bacteria on the bottom of the aquarium is not broken down, however. Such service naturally comes at a price: the recommended manufacturer’s price for the version for a 120 to 240 l freshwater tank is € 149, while the model for a 200 to 400 litre tank is € 159.
