JS started out from small beginnings in 1978 as a manufacturer of equestrian products. The company produced saddles, harnesses and other accessory items for horses, and these were soon being marketed worldwide. JS concluded cooperation agreements with distribution partners for this purpose, to facilitate swift, flexible product delivery. The equestrian sphere, which has grown in the meantime to over 35,000 products, now comes under JS Exports, one of seven firms in the JS Group.

The production and marketing of snack, chew and treat articles for dogs, cats and birds has developed since the 1980s into another important business sector. To this end the company JS International, which is based in Kanpur and is engaged solely in export operations, was established in 1983. Its most important sales markets include the USA, the Middle East, South-East Asia, Northern Asia and Europe.

JS International’s rapid expansion into Europe was made easier by its cooperation with the German company Pfiff Reitsport of Meschede-Freienohl. Pfiff Reitsport is one of the main producers and wholesalers in the equestrian accessory segment, exporting its products to more than 50 countries all over the world. In 1995 Pfiff Reitsport branched out into the container import of dried pet food for dogs, cats and birds and has since become the exclusive general importer of JS pet food products for the whole of Europe. The growing diversification of the snack market has prompted swift growth of this business segment. The range produced at JS International includes pressed rawhide products and snacks of all kinds, such as beef strips, offal, cattle ears, lungs, tongues, heart and liver strips. Special mixes are offered for birds that contain valuable special seeds, and these are premium segment products like the snack products for dogs and cats.
Between 2001 and 2003 alone, sales of snack products in Europe more than doubled from 1,100 t to 2,300 t. The principal recipient is Germany, accounting for 74 per cent of sales, followed by the Netherlands (9 per cent) and France (8 per cent).
