The American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA) has appointed two new members to its board of directors: Kenneth Oh, currently business unit manager for Tetra USA in Blacksburg, and Marty Walker, currently vice president and general manager for The Iams Company in Dayton.

Deal for 20 stores
Office Depot, which claims to be one of the world’s leading sellers of office products, and Petco Animal Supplies, a leading speciality retailer of premium pet food, supplies and services, have announced that they have reached an agreement under which Petco will acquire 20 former Kids R” Us stores from Office Depot for approximately 45 mio $ in cash plus the assumption of lease obligations on leased properties. “We know these stores well and this acquisition provides Petco with a unique opportunity to bolster our presence in South Florida and Ohio, markets in which we are underrepresented and where approximately one-half of the stores are located,” said Brian Devine, Chairman of Petco.
Pet brands from Del Monte to Royal Canin
Del Monte Foods Company has announced that its principal operating subsidiary, Del Monte Corporation, and DLM Foods Canada Corp. have entered into an agreement to sell all its rights in the IVD and “Medi-Cal” brands as well as its rights in the “Techni-Cal” brand in the United States and Canada, to Royal Canin for 82.5 mio $ DLM Foods Canada Corp. will manufacture certain products for Royal Canin during a transition period after the sale. Del Monte will also perform certain transition services for Royal Canin during agreed post-closing periods. Under the sale agreement, the IVD brand will be sold to Royal Canin U.S.A. and the “Medi-Cal” and “Techni-Cal” brands will be sold to Royal Canin Canada. These brands are sold primarily in the United States and Canada, and generated approximately 57 mio $ in revenue in fiscal 2003 for Del Monte Foods.
Pets Mart opened 67 new stores
The speciality retailer Pets Mart generated 3.0 billion $ in net sales in 2003, up from 2.7 billion $ in net sales a year ago. Comparable store sales — or sales in stores open at least a year — grew 7.0 percent in 2003. Net sales for the fourth quarter of 2003 were 839.7 mio $, compared to 740.5 mio $ for the same period in 2002, and comparable store sales grew 7.7 percent in the fourth quarter.
