The shop entrance is designed to be inviting and visually appealing.
“It all started when I realized that there were no professional pet shops in Poland, but primarily because I love animals,” says Anna Januszewska. She started in 1991 with one shop with a floorspace of only 15 m². During the next two years four more shops opened, the biggest with a retail area of 50 m².
At present Anna Zoo operates six pet shops in Poland’s capital Warsaw, mostly in exclusive shopping malls in the centre of town. Anna Januszewska’s shop design concept is modern and oriented to customers’ needs. The average floorspace is around 200 m², with the biggest shop boasting 550 m². Adjacent to each shop is a veterinary clinic and a dog grooming salon.
The chain offers a large selection of familiar brands.
The location of the shops in shopping malls makes it possible to attract mostly young and active customers who have enough money to buy well-known high quality brands like “Royal Canin”, “Eukanuba”, “Flexi”, “Dr Clauders”, “Vitakraft”, “Hills” etc.
Dog food and canine accessories account for the majority of sales, followed by products for cats, birds and rodents. Tropical fish also feature in the Anna Zoo shops, with one shop even specializing in aquatics.
The average floorspace of the shops is around 200 m².
According to Anna Januszewska, 14 000 products and pets from all over the world are available in her shops. The chain works with 63 wholesalers and suppliers. Anna Zoo employs 60 people, including four veterinarians who act in an advisory capacity for clients with regard to pets and their nutrition.
Anna Zoo is expanding fast. Next year the active pet trade chain intends to open some small shops integrated into big multi-storey buildings. “With these shops we hope to attract people who don’t visit shopping centres. We give them the opportunity to buy good quality products for their pets,” says Anna Januszewska. Compared with the existing outlets, the new shops will focus on a cheaper assortment.
A high quality standard: the aquatics department at Anna Zoo.
Anna Januszewska is considering a delivery service system in the future that makes it possible to provide pet owners with food and accessory products at home. Another aim is to set up the biggest veterinary clinic in Poland with modern equipment and an analysis and research department as well as a professional pet shop.
