With this innovation pet owners can proactively care for their pet’s dental health both during and after meals. Launched across Europe in July 2002, “Eukanuba” with “DentalCare” is the result of months of research into the dental health care of dogs and cats. Representing a major advance in the dietary approach to dental care, this latest innovation is based on the use of a special combination of minerals to reduce the build-up of tartar, a precursor of dental problems.

With the introduction of the “DentalCare System” the Iams Company has scored another major achievement in nutritional health care. This innovative technology is not restricted to a specific diet — the entire line-up of dry adult and senior “Eukanuba” nutrition for cats and dogs provides dental care beyond the mealtime.

Shocking statistics suggest that around 85 per cent of dogs and 75 per cent of cats, many as young as 3 years of age, have dental problems.

The traditional nutritional approach to dental care has been limited to using abrasive techniques of either chews or dry kibbles. However, mechanical abrasion provides no continued effect after meals or between chewing sessions. The innovative approach pioneered by the Iams Company is a dual-action technology involving both the effect of the crunchy kibble, and the special minerals which embed within the plaque. By becoming incorporated in dental plaque, the nutritional minerals help prevent further mineralisation and conversion into tartar. Applied to the outer surface of the kibble, the minerals are released from the diet during eating and target the whole mouth, therefore providing benefits to non-chewing surfaces as well as…
