Portugal will be the guest country at the next edition of the Spanish pet trade fair Iberzoo + Propet from 26 to 28 February. Portugal's presence is considered to be of great importance as more and more people in Portugal are welcoming pets into their homes.
According to a research study, 72 per cent of Portuguese people have at least one pet, with dogs (61 per cent) and cats (54 per cent) being the most common. The results of the study also show that 78 per cent of Portuguese pet owners are between 25 and 34 years old. This younger generation is not only driving the market, but is also increasing the demand for special products and services, reports trade fair organiser Ifema Madrid.
Supermarkets are the primary channel for purchasing pet food in Portugal, accounting for 65.6 per cent of all sales. This is followed by pet shops, which make up 21 per cent, and the online channel, which has reached 17.2 per cent.
