The percentage of US households owning pets slipped from 54 per cent in 2019 to 51 per cent in 2023. This is what the market research company Packaged Facts found out in its just-released Pet Population and Pet Ownership Trends in the US. Accounting for this trend are dog ownership levels, which fell from 42 per cent in 2018 to 38 per cent over this period.
Unlike dog ownership, however, cat ownership rates have edged upwards since the Covid pandemic, and correspondingly have emerged as an important driver to pet market growth, according to Packaged Facts.
