Although its consumption has long been criticised abroad as cruel, dog meat has previously been considered a delicacy in many regions in Asia. Now, however, opposition to the practice of eating dog meat has increased among the younger generation there as they become increasingly aware of animal welfare issues.

In South Korea, the National Assembly has passed a law banning the sale of dog meat. It is set to come into force after a three-year transition period and final ratification by the president. Raising, selling and slaughtering dogs for meat will then be punishable by up to three years in prison or a fine of 30 bn won (approx. 20 000 euros).

There are more than 1 100 dog farms in South Korea. These breeders in particular have previously opposed a ban on sales. They are now expected to receive compensation for the closure of their businesses.
