Are the first pet food products based on cultured meat about to come onto the market in the near future? Shannon Falconer, founder and CEO of biotech company BioCraft Pet Nutrition, is showing a YouTube video on her LinkedIn page featuring an 18-year-old male cat testing food produced from cultured mouse cells. At the side of her LinkedIn post, the entrepreneur refers to the imminent market launch of the product.

Bio Craft Pet Nutrition is the company’s new name since May of this year, according to the vegan business magazine Vegconomist. The reason given for the company relinquishing its previous name, Because Animals, is its decision to concentrate exclusively in future on bringing cultured meat onto the pet product market. This is also expected to include research, development, infrastructure and cooperation with pet food manufacturers.

To this end, the company stopped its plant-based products sold under the Because Animals brand at the end of 2022. It parted with the related recipes and provisional patents but retained all the intellectual property rights to cultured meat.

To speed up product development, Bio Craft has appointed Dr Theresa Rothenbücher, previously with vegan start-up Revo Foods, as chief product officer.
