The UK-based pet supplies company Podium Pet Products, an international specialist in natural pet products, celebrated yesterday’s International Women’s Day (8 March) in a special way. To mark the day, the company decided to give 15 per cent of its net profit for the whole week to the charity Too Young To Wed (TYTW), which helps to locate and prevent women being forced into marriages against their will as children.
Too Young to Wed started in Afghanistan. In 2003, founder and Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Stephanie Sinclair travelled to Herat, where she was working on a story about girls and women who set themselves on fire. There, she discovered a disturbing pattern among burn ward patients: most had been forced into marriage as children. The women and girls brave enough to show their faces and tell their stories in images launched a global movement to end child marriage.
