Four pet industry brands made it into the UK’s Top 500 Brand Names list this year, and all four of them happen to be pet foods: “Whiskas” (Mars) came in at 180, closely followed by “Pedigree” (also by Mars) at 209. Making it to the 443rd position was “Winalot” (Nestle), followed by “KiteKat” at 457, adding a third Mars brand to the Top 500 list. Thousands of leading brands were included in the initial list before it was whittled down to a shortlist of 1 350 by The Centre for Brand Analysis (www.tcba.co.uk). An independent council of experts then scored the remaining brands, eliminating the lowest-scoring 50 per cent. Those that made it through faced the final round; 2 200 UK consumers on the YouGov community panel had the last vote before the 500 highest ranking brands were given Superbrand status. The top 5 Superbrands to make it through this rigorous process were: 1. Google, 2. Microsoft, 3. Mercedes-Benz, 4. BBC and 5. British Airways.
