With Kiwoko and TiendAnimal from Spain, who currently operate seven locations in Portugal, further participants are joining the fray. Reason enough for the established three to push ahead with their expansion.

The top dog: Petoutlet

With 44 locations, Petoutlet is the leading pet shop chain in Portugal. Some of the stores are branded under the Petlandia logo. Owner Adao Teixeira is not running out of ideas to drive his business forward: with his Petolistic retail format, he recently developed a concept for selling sustainable products. "Petolistic is a store concept geared to a new generation of pet lovers," says Adao Teixeira, announcing his intention to open more Petolistic outlets in the near future.
On 29 August, the largest Petoutlet store to date was opened in Porto. It offers 1 200 m² of space and is probably one of the largest pet shops in Portugal. "This store has an innovative concept, where we are giving more emphasis to natural, but where the customer can find everything he needs for his animals, the best brands, as well as some services and a private park for customers," comments Adao Teixeira. In addition to a few thousand products in store, the store offers a grooming service, an activity park, and a veterinary surgery. "We want it to be not just a store, but a space where the customer feels good," adds Teixeira.

The experienced retailer: Ornimundo

In addition to its Ornimundo stores, the Alfena-based Ornimundo Group runs a flourishing wholesale business with the Propet Company. Moura da Silva opened his first pet shop in the suburbs of Porto in November 1994.
Ornimundo recently announced two new store openings: a 100 m² outlet in the Acqua Roma Shopping Centre (Lisbon) and 700 m² in the Atlantic Retail Park (Setúbal). While the small store in the Acqua Roma Shopping Centre at the heart of Lisbon will concentrate on dog and cat food plus accessories, the 700 m² outlet in the Atlantic Retail Park stocks a full range of products. It will also sell aquarium fish and small animals. The large retail area is also to be used for a number of special presentations, such as an agility area for dogs.Counting these two new stores, Ornimundo now operates 27 outlets across Portugal. The stores are all located in shopping centres and retail parks.
