The success story of the American pet supplies industry is continuing. This can be seen from new market figures which were presented at the Global Pet Expo in Orlando. American Pet Product Association (APPA) analysts have calculated that in 2019, 95.7 bn dollars were spent on pets in the US. Pet food and treats made up the largest proportion of the total, with 2019 sales amounting to 36.9 bn dollars (2018: 30.32 bn dollars), led by dog and cat food. APPA analysts forecast that in 2020, pet food and treats category sales will increase by a further 4 per cent to 38.4 bn dollars.
Veterinary care & product sales came in at 29.3 bn dollars last year. For 2020, a sales increase to 30.2 bn dollars is estimated for this category. Following vet care & product sales, other supplies, live animals and OTC medicine sold at retail accounted for 19.2 bn dollars in 2019. The estimated sales in 2020 are 19.8 bn dollars, according to APPA. New to APPA's pet spending data, this category also includes estimated retail sales of fish, reptiles, small animals and birds, which had previously formed a separate category.
The category of other services contributed 10.3 bn dollars to industry sales last year and recorded the second highest year-on-year growth (6 per cent), just behind food and treats. Services include boarding, grooming, insurance, training, pet sitting and walking and all services outside of veterinary care. The figures are based on a review of the most recent data from the top three research firms studying the pet industry - Nielsen, Euromonitor and Packaged Facts - combined with insight from industry experts and leading pet retailers, confirming underlying data.
