While in Hungary recently, I took a look at some of the pet shops in the capital Budapest. Like every-where else in the world, Hungary has its share of small, proprietor-run shops that stock an astonishingly large, in-depth product range in spite of their limited retail area of just a few square metres.
Of course, the capital is home to large, modern pet stores too, and there are also pet product retailers specialising only in aquatics, for example, who court favour with their customers above all by offering a choice assortment of species and products.
At first glance more or less the same products were on show in Budapest as are for sale in pet stores in Paris, London, Shanghai or Dallas. The differences between individual countries only become evident on looking a second time. Did you know that the pet food bins that are so popular in the speciality stores must have a lid in Hungary for hygiene reasons? Compliance with the regulation governing this is even officially monitored. In France or Germany, on the other hand, pet food is often offered for sale in open containers. Another thing that surprised me is that the pearl-like silica cat litter is extremely popular in Hungary, whereas in many other countries it is either a shelf warmer or niche product.
Different countries, different customs. The world is diverse and multicoloured, and so is the pet supplies business.
This is what makes the world-leading fair Interzoo, which takes place from 8 to 11 May in Germany, to be precise in the Franconian metropolis of Nuremberg, so special and exciting. During the four days of this show visitors can get an overview of what is particularly in demand in the international pet sector at the moment. They can talk to retail and industry experts in the sector from all over the world, they can exchange information on new partnerships and they can find new distribution partners in a wide range of countries. All these things are possible at a show that will be bigger than ever this year, with over 2 000 exhibitors.
Dähne Verlag, publisher of PET worldwide and co-organiser of the International Pet Conference, will also have its own stand at Interzoo again. Visit us in hall 1 on stand 335 to find out about our exciting range of publications…
