The 21st China International Pet Show (CIPS) took place in Shanghai in November. Spurred on by the sustained growth of the Chinese and Asian pet supplies market, the fair demonstrated its importance once again as a meeting place for the pet supplies sector in this region. Around 60 000 visitors came to the exhibition halls of the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai to view the stands of 1 293 exhibitors, on an overall exhibition space of 116 429 m2. The CIPS is organised annually by the China Great Wall International Exhibition Co. in cooperation with Nürnberg Messe.
Retrospective on 2017
The China International Pet Show is one of the foremost trade fairs in Asia for pet and aquarium requisites. The range on offer extends from food, nutritional and care products to housing, toys and digital pet gadgets. The aquarium business is also well represented: this segment featured 366 companies, accounting for roughly 28 per cent of the 1 293 exhibitors in 2017.
The CIPS attracted exhibitors from 23 countries, with Germany, Korea, Italy and Japan joining China as the leading exhibiting nations. 285 companies in all, accounting for 22 per cent of the total number of exhibitors, came to Shanghai from abroad. For international exhibitors in particular, the CIPS is a proven springboard to the Asian market.
The industry comes together
Visitors to the CIPS in 2017 came mainly from China and the rest of Asia, with visitors also from Europe and North America. Most trade visitors were in the distributor and retailer categories, which each accounted for approximately 23 per cent, followed by manufacturers and wholesalers. Visitors to the CIPS had a wide range of different events to choose from. The Global Pets Forum Asia took place for the third time in 2017. Targeting leading representatives of the sector worldwide, this event on the eve of the show offered talks and insights related to the topic of "Innovations". At the fair itself, specialist lectures and a new product presentation featured alongside two major international competitions, the CIPS Global Ornamental Fish Championship and the CIPS Global Aquascaping Championship. The CIPS Global Ornamental Fish Championship covered sixteen categories of fish from all over the globe, which were judged by an expert jury. At the CIPS Global Aquascaping Championship eleven teams of 33 aquascapers were able to demonstrate their prowess live.
