All segments of the Canadian pet market are growing steadily, with one exception. Current Euromonitor figures compare sales in 2010 with those of 2014 and clearly underline the trend.

Euromonitor determined the overall growth in the pet care market for 2014 at US$ 2.525 bn, an increase of 1.15 per cent compared with 2010. US$ 1.523 bn was spent on food products for dogs, cats, birds, small mammals and reptiles, equivalent to an increase of 1.14 per cent in this segment compared with 2010. The pet products market, on the other hand, grew by 1.16 per cent from US$ 0.8 bn to US$ 1.001 bn.

Winners and losers

Euromonitor put the size of the dog food market at US$ 884.5 mio in 2014. The market has grown from US$ 763.1 mio since 2010 by 1.16 per cent or US$ 121.4 mio. Dry food accounts for over half of this market at US$ 574 mio, likewise increasing by 1.16 per cent (US$ 81.2 mio). Treats and mixers have risen by 1.19 per cent from US$ 168.5 to US$ 201 mio. The wet dog food segment lags considerably behind with an overall market size of US$ 109.5 mio and only slight growth of 1.08 per cent since 2010 (US$ 7.8 mio). The figures are very similar for the cat food segment, which accounts for US$ 577.8 mio according to Euromonitor and has grown by 1.13 per cent or US$ 65.3 mio since 2010. This figure is made up of US$ 341.1 mio on dry cat food (+1.16 per cent or US$ 45.8 mio), US$ 182.8 mio on wet cat food (+1.08 per cent or US$ 13.3 mio) and US$ 53.9 mio on cat treats and mixers (+1.13 per cent or US$ 6.2 mio).
The strongest growth in percentage terms, even if on a very modest level, was recorded for food for small mammals and reptiles. This market grew from US$ 8.8 mio to 10.6 mio, equivalent to an increase of 1.2 per cent. Fish food grew by 1.1 per cent from US$ 23.5 to 25.8 mio. The only negative trend was in the bird food segment, where the market declined by one per cent from US$ 27.3 to 25.2 mio.

Focus on healthy pets

Euromonitor recorded average growth of 1.16 per cent in the non-food segment. This includes cat litter, the market for which increased from US$ 334.2 to 362.4 mio (+1.08 per cent). In the pet healthcare segment, sales rose by US$ 6.8 mio to US$ 44.2 mio (+1.18 per cent) and the pet dietary supplements segment grew by US$ 29.7 mio to US$ 224.2 mio (+1.15 per cent). Euromonitor's survey indicates very respectable growth of 1.24 per cent for other pet products from US$ 297.7 mio to US$ 370.1 mio.
