China? Isn’t that the land of opportunity when it comes to product piracy, cheap copies, poor quality and so on? We want to blank out the dire situation with regard to working conditions and the curbs on personal and human rights dictated by the state, however bad they are, at this point. It is the negative images that most people think of, however, when the topic of China is raised. But talk to professionals in trade and industry and you soon get a different picture: of a quality-oriented population with a modern outlook on life, a population that values the “Made in Europe” tag when making shopping choices. Of companies that are working hard to bring their production conditions up to western European standards to remain competitive. The realisation is dawning that secure jobs and employees who receive a fair wage are a guarantee of quality. The same applies in the retail trade. More and more modern pet stores are opening in China’s major conurbations. Their similarity to stores in Western Europe is certainly no coincidence, but rather a desired feature. But that is not dishonourable. When it comes to the product ranges, the shelves carry a growing number of premium-grade dog and cat food products, while accessories, toys and aquarium equipment all bear familiar brand names from western Europe. I would venture to say here that China in general and the pet supplies sector in particular are on the right track. It is important for everyone involved to keep an eye on the trends, draw their own conclusions from these and adapt their activities accordingly. I venture to say here that a visit to the China International Pet Show is an absolute must for anyone operating in the international pet supplies sector, whether on the industrial or retailing side. I can only recommend that you see for yourself the good progress that is being made in the pet supplies business in China, a country that is increasingly becoming a major player in our daily lives. And if you do visit the show, send me a quick e-mail to let me know what you found in Guangzhou and what you thought of the Chinese pet sector. I look forward to hearing from you!
