Following a rebuilding period of around six months (the premises previously housed a kitchen studio), Fressnapf's managing partner Torsten Toeller opened the new store in Munich's Lotte-Branz-Straße in the busy Euro-Industriepark complex together with the dog psychologist Martin Rütter and canine expert Uschi Ackermann. One highlight of the launch day was the release of 1 000 balloons with a € 5 voucher attached to each as a thank-you to all Munich residents.
The 1 000th Fressnapf store in Europe is also the twelfth XXL store in the chain. An investment of around € 750 000 has resulted in a retail area of approx. 1 200 m² accommodating over 12 000 products. Fressnapf already operates eleven XXL stores in Germany and one in Luxembourg. For franchisee Günther Arndt this is the first XXL of his twelve stores in total, ten of which are in Munich and two in Ingolstadt.
Focus on higher-value products
The new store boasts several superlatives. The concept is in line with that of the other XXL stores, but the proportion of higher-value products in the overall range has been increased. This is due to the above-average purchasing power of the population of the Greater Munich area.
Torsten Toeller stresses that the XXL stores bring in two-and-a-half times the sales of a normal Fressnapf shop on average. This is attributable not only to the larger retail area, but also to increased sales per square metre. The store features a wide range of pets, including fish, small mammals, reptiles and birds, which are presented attractively in large sales enclosures. In addition to the pets, customers and visitors are also offered extensive practical information on the cohabitation of pets and people. To this end, four DVD information terminals, two islands featuring specialist books and above all numerous staff are available as competent advisers to field all questions relating to keeping pets and caring for them.
Large pet sales enclosures
Approx. 26 per cent of the retail area is devoted to the dog product range, 18 per cent to cats, 13 per cent to small mammals and 6 per cent to birds. Aquariums/ponds account for 25 per cent and terrariums for 9 per cent.
More than 80 aquariums of various sizes are home to roughly 8 000 fish as well as crabs and shrimp. A show pond containing koi is rounded off by an impressively high waterfall, while a plant pool, framed attractively by rock structures, offers a large and constantly changing…
