The company, established in 1974, has been trading under the same ownership for 35 years and states that it is still leading the way. The superstores in Colchester and Ipswich opened in the mid-1980s, offering pet and aquatic products, pets, birds, fish and reptiles. The Seapets website is acknowledged both within the trade and by web design and development companies as one of the leading pet and aquatic websites in the UK. “It offers the ability to easily purchase the majority of the many brand-leading products available in our stores, together with information and downloads to further assist our customers,” general manager Jerry Arnold reports. The stores and website are supported by Seapets’ own warehouse, which also operates as a cash and carry for local kennels, catteries, breeders and animal professionals, allowing them to collect larger quantities of pet food at prices which reflect the volume purchased.
A wide assortment
Over ten thousand aquatic and pet products are available from stock, plus a vast range of tropical, marine and coldwater fish together with small animals, birds and reptiles. The comparatively new reptile sections are well stocked with livestock and equipment, satisfying beginner and expert alike. “Whatever the interest in pets, we have the right brand-leading products at the keenest prices,” Jerry Arnold states. His company works well with the largest pet food companies, offering unique promotions, all available in store and on the website. The customers either take away their purchases or enjoy free or economical delivery services locally, nationally and throughout Europe. “We deliver glass aquariums all over the UK, parcels all over Europe and postal packets worldwide,” Jerry Arnold continues. “This has clearly raised our profile from an East Anglian based retailer to at least a national retail brand, and we continue to steadily grow this.”
The last year has continued to see considerable sales growth. In spite of the unfavourable weather conditions, the pond department, whilst slower to start than usual, has recovered in a most encouraging way. “For the future, various in-store department refits are planned to enhance and improve our displays, many services are planned for the website and we will be encouraging even more of our staff to make their own personal strides forward in qualified knowledge,” Jerry Arnold concludes. “Seapets will continue its steady growth in the future.”
