The late 1980s and early 1990s, which proved to be one of the most significant turning points in Polish history, were a time of major change in both economic and political life in Poland. It was a period of transition from communism to democracy that forced a free market system based on supply and demand. From that moment on, new private companies started mushrooming on a scale never before experienced in Eastern Europe. New businesses and industries were discovered that had not previously existed in Poland.
At the same time, Adam Florczuk pioneered a business in the pet product trade. In 1990 he set up Inter-Zoo Adam, which started trading in the small city of Legionowo, situated 20 km north of Warsaw.

The main reason that Adam Florczuk chose to go into that line of business was the enormous interest in zoology nurtured by his family for many years. His father and elder brother were involved in breeding pigeons and he had been helping them since his early childhood. But breeding pigeons wasn’t enough for him, and he turned his interest to exotic and wild birds.
He began his career by opening a pet shop in his home town of Legionowo, which developed fast thanks to his great dedication, interpersonal skills and in-depth knowledge of the business. He took advantage of the many contacts he had made while working as a clothes wholesaler in many European countries as well as in Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. While visiting these countries he had made many friends, mainly people involved in the pet product trade and zoological sphere, such as owners and directors of bird husbandry businesses, zoological gardens or bazaars, who were surprised to receive a visit by a stranger from such an exotic and remote country. These friendships were to prove very fruitful later when Florczuk started up his own zoological business.
Soon after establishing his first shop he opened another one, this time in Warsaw. However, importing from Far Eastern countries for these two shops was not profitable enough, so he decided to open a wholesale firm to supply zoological goods to local shops. Florczuk specialized initially in exotic birds as well as birdseed and accessories, but as time went by he extended his business to include aquatic products, food and accessories for dogs and cats, and terrarium animals and their requisites.
