The Swiss online retailer Galaxus and its partners laid the foundation stone for a new logistics center in Neuenburg am Rhein, Germany, last week: The first warehouse should be ready as early as summer 2025, according to a company press release. The company is also looking to recruit 1 000 employees.
“This is the largest commercial development in Neuenburg since the 1960s,” said Jens Fondy-Langela, Mayor of Neuenburg, at the laying of the foundation stone for the first of two new Galaxus warehouses. The move to Neuenburg is also very important for Digitec Galaxus and its subsidiary Galaxus Germany: with around 90 000 square meters of warehouse space and 1 000 employees, the site will be similar in size to the largest logistics center to date in Wohlen, Switzerland. According to the company, planning permission has also been granted for the second hall that Galaxus wants to rent in Neuenburg, but the species protection has not yet been clarified.
“As we are growing strongly in both Switzerland and Germany, we need more space,” explained Michael Stolle, COO of Galaxus Digitec. And because the Swiss processes in Rafz and Utzenstorf still needed time, the project in Neuchâtel had top priority. It is ideally located to deliver quickly to Switzerland, but also to Germany and France. Galaxus is therefore not only looking for staff in the small German town, but also in Mulhouse in France, which is only 20 minutes away by car and, with a population of more than 100 000, is the closest major city geographically.
The Migros Group, majority owner of Digitec Galaxus, recently approved the budget for four more years of Galaxus Germany. Prior to this, Migros had put all of the Group's strategic business areas to the test. However, the analysis had shown that the targeted further development of the online business in the European market was promising.
Almost at the same time, Galaxus Germany moved into a new office in Hamburg with three times more space: the online retailer left the Altona district and has been greeting customers from the centrally located Hoheluft-Ost district since September 20.
