The US start-up company Because Animals, a Chicago-based specialist in the development of laboratory meat for pet food, has plans to establish a facility in Vienna in 2023. This was announced by CEO and co-founder Shannon Falconer recently in an interview with the multimedia start-up platform Brutkasten.
The new facility will aim to reduce further the cost of producing laboratory meat. At present the planning phase is being organised and the facility is not expected to open until mid-2023. In total it will employ around 15 staff.
Falconer puts the investment costs at between ten and 13 million US dollars. She explained that the start-up is currently planning to complete a Series A investment round of at least 25 million dollars. As to why Because Animals chose Austria as a location, Falconer cited personal reasons. “Firstly, Austria is a wonderful place to live. My partner also already had a job in the region, and we decided spontaneously to move fully to Austria,” she said.
