Malaysia's Medic Pets has laid out an aggressive growth roadmap that sees the organic pet supplies maker entering more markets and developing new products while venturing into retailing foreign-branded pet products on its home turf.

The company is keen not only to expand its operations in Malaysia and the broader Southeast Asian region, but also to bring its products to Europe and the Middle East.
Medic Pets started as a manufacturer of organic anti-fungal and fur sprays, anti-flea shampoo, wound balms, and ear drops for small pets. Apart from selling the products under its own brand, the company also enters into OEM arrangements.
"Medic Pets is looking for opportunities to grow," company director Siti Sofia Ramli told PET worldwide.
In the offing is a plan to distribute foreign-branded pet supplies in Malaysia. The company aims to be the sole distributor of 200 pet food, litter and accessories brands from Europe, but also Thailand and China, in peninsular Malaysia. It has been in discussions with companies since April 2020.

House of Pets outlets

Medic Pets will be selling the products through House of Pets Asia, a subsidiary that currently operates four pet supply stores, with a fifth one being built in Johor, the Malaysian state that borders and caters to Singapore, a regional hub. More House of Pets outlets will be built in the near term and by next year they will be converted into pet hypermarkets.
Terms of the distribution agreement include entering into a one-year contract with chosen suppliers, during which the Malaysian firm will be testing their potential in the market. The marketing strategy of the prospective partners, as well as their commitment and production capacity, will be under consideration. "We see the opportunity to open up is now. We've always been considering the retail distribution channel, but because of Covid, it was put on hold last year," Siti Sofia Ramli said. "We believe the time is now, because even if we delay further, Covid will not disappear."
Medic Pets is also bringing its own product range of palm-oil-based pet care products to the Middle East through a partnership with Lulu Hypermarket - the biggest retail chain in the Gulf Cooperation Council, with 193 outlets - as part of its multi­pronged expansion plan. The company started selling Medic Pets products in Dubai last December and has plans to enter Saudi Arabia.
