Looking at the statistics from 2015 to 2019, the report says that Canadians spent nearly 10 bn Canadian dollars (approx. 6.8 bn euros) on their pets, as compared with 7.2 bn Canadian dollars (approx. 5.1 bn euros) in 2015. The average growth of the pet grooming and boarding industry in Canada was estimated to be 3.7 per cent in 2015-2020.
Around 5.9 mio dogs and 7.9 mio cats live in 35 per cent (dogs) and 38 per cent (cats) of Canadian households. Dog food costs a dog owner 1 083 Canadian dollars (approx. 735 euros) per year. In 2017, 631 dollars was the average annual household spend on pets in Canada, the report says. According to a survey by the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association, dog owners pay out 3 417 Canadian dollars a year and cat owners have to spend 2 272 Canadian dollars on their animals.

The market research company Mordor Intelligence expects Canada's pet food market to grow by 4.3 per cent by 2025. This will benefit primarily the roughly 2 100 pet and pet supplies stores, because only 9.3 per cent of pet owners purchase pet food online. Over 750 of the shops are located in the federal state of Ontario, according to a statistical survey by StatCan.
