The Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC) announces its partnership with HowGood, an independent research company with what it claims is the world's largest sustainability database for products and ingredients.
This partnership is designed to enable PSC members to make data-driven decisions on ingredient sourcing and formulations to reduce carbon emissions across their supply chain. HowGood’s carbon footprinting model has been verified by the Carbon Trust, is aligned to global sustainability and climate reporting frameworks, and is compliant with enterprise data security standards including the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, CDP, GRI, TCFD, ISO, and Science Based Targets.
"Data is essential to making the best decisions in ingredient sourcing, new product development and product formulation," said Jim Lamancusa, Executive Director of PSC, HowGood's primary partner in the pet industry.
Partnering with HowGood is intended to help PSC members understand the environmental impacts of each ingredient they source to make the best decisions for their business. "I want to thank five of our members, Fera Pets, Petcurean, Natoo, MFiber, and Earth Animal, for supporting PSC on this platform so all members can have access. "
HowGood conducts sustainability assessments at product and ingredient level using eight key indicators: Greenhouse gas emissions, blue water usage, biodiversity, soil health, labor risk, land occupation, animal welfare and processing. The scope and depth of the assessments provide insight into decarbonization opportunities and benchmarking of the industry.
It can break down the general impact of an ingredient as well as sourcing location, certifications or regenerative aspects, explained Allison Reser, Director of Sustainability & Innovation at PSC. In this way, the positive impact of responsible sourcing in the pet industry can be measured.
"The partnership with the PSC, with over 200 members, will bring sustainability transparency to the pet food industry on an unprecedented scale," Michael Streitberger, Head of Partnerships at HowGood, is also convinced.
